New Town CAO

The Town of Annapolis Royal is extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Carol St-Amour as its
new Chief Administrative Officer.

Ms. St-Amour comes to Annapolis Royal with nearly twenty-five years’ experience working in municipal
governments and public administration across Canada. She has a background in finance, administration,
and intergovernmental affairs, including a degree in Political Science.

“We are confident that Carol is the right person for our community at this time. She has the skills to help
us develop our community in a positive way, while still protecting our unique heritage and culture”, says
Mayor Phil Roberts.

Ms. St-Amour is equally excited, “I moved to this area two years ago with my family because of its
outstanding built environment and culture. I look forward to helping guide Council and the town as we
tackle our fiscal challenges, while seeking opportunities to improve and develop our community.”

The Town of Annapolis Royal recently agreed to change the Chief Administrative Officer position to
part-time as part of its strategy to reduce expenditures in light of its reduced revenues. Despite this,
Mayor Roberts notes, “We are committed to using our community’s assets to the best advantage while
respecting the unique character and history that our people have built over the past 400 years.”

The CSAP (Conseil scolaire acadien provincial) fully supports the initiative to open a french school in this area. The challenge is to demonstrate to the Provincial Government that there is sufficient interest within the local population for a French school to be viable.

A Parent Committee was formed to help spread the word about this initiative and to recruit other interested families.

Historic Gardens Receives International Honours

Friday the 13th was not an unlucky day in any way for the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, who were recognized as one of the “5 North American Gardens Worth Travelling For”.

The Historic Gardens were honoured on April 13 at the Annual Canadian and International Garden Tourism Awards in Vancouver, BC. The Garden Tourism Awards are presented to organizations and individuals who have distinguished themselves in the development and promotion of the garden experience as a tourism attraction.

In the award notification, Michel Gauthier, Manager for the Canadian Garden Tourism Council writes, “It is a well-deserved acknowledgement of the quality of experience offered by Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens to tourists travelling for a garden experience and your leadership in the development of Garden Tourism in Canada.”

Gardens Chair Keith Crysler states “The Historic Gardens is delighted to receive this honour and would like to thank the Canadian Garden Tourism Council and all the organizations associated with it. The Gardens has received several awards in the past but this international designation shows a new breadth of recognition.”

Gardens Manager Trish Fry says that Gardens staff and volunteers take great pride in the Gardens, the #1 Attraction in Nova Scotia on Tripadvisor for 2011, and are thrilled at this latest honour. “This award really is a testament to the work of a whole community over the span of more than 30 years. Staff, volunteers and supporters, past & present, have all played a huge role in the development of these world class gardens, and in the creation of an enjoyable and memorable garden experience for visitors from all over the world.”

Fry adds “What makes this award so very special is that we have been chosen by our industry partners in Garden Tourism – recognition by your peers is the highest form of praise! Canada’s garden tourism product is absolutely remarkable, and we are pleased to be a part of it!”

Crysler adds a special invitation “So, yes, the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens is well worth traveling for. Come and visit; we’d love to meet you.”
