Best Old-House Neighborhood 2012

On behalf of This Old House and Editor Scott Omelianuk, I want to congratulate your town on being named one of This Old House’s Best Old-House Neighborhoods 2012.

After researching hundreds of cities, towns and neighborhoods throughout the United States and Canada, we’ve decided your neighborhood deserves special recognition for its astonishing selection of great homes, and the community spirit that supports them. A complete list of the winning neighborhoods is found in a special package on ThisOldHouse.com. You can view it at http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,20569042_21121492,00.html.

Our goal for this contest was simple. We wanted to recognize cities, towns or individual neighborhoods that might not be on our readers’ radar, but deserve to be; places overflowing with beautiful, architecturally significant, or even, historic houses with special appeal to old-house-loving buyers. We also looked for places where people are happy to lend a helping hand on a neighbor’s home improvement project; where spur-of-the-moment porch parties are among residents’ favorite summer activities; where amenities, such as restaurants, hardware stores, or hiking trails, are just a short walk or drive away, and where people come together for specialevents, whether it’s a holiday festival or a house tour; a 4th of July parade or a chilly night outside watching a local college or high school’s football game.

We’re hoping this designation will help ensure your community’s continued success or revitalization by getting the word out to hundreds of thousands of old-house-enthusiasts nationwide.

Heritage Day

Heritage Day was established in 1973 by the Heritage Canada Foundation, and is celebrated the 3rd Monday of February to encourage the preservation and promotion of Canada’s nationally significant historic, architectural, natural and scenic heritage.

Annapolis Royal Town Council celebrated Heritage Day by having its fourth open-house. The open-house was from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm and was open to the public. There were displays on the heritage buildings throughout Town. Jerri Costa, from the Board of Police Commissioners, dressed in true Gibson Girl fashion, displayed a pictorial history of the Police Force in Annapolis Royal. Grace Butland from ARCAC created a display that celebrates the Arts Council’s 30th Anniversary.

Town Population

Take a look at the Annapolis Royal’s profile.

Especially check out the population figure which came out at 481 vs 444 in 2006 – which computes to an 8.3% increase – the % increase is much higher than the provincial average and also higher than for all Canada, I believe. This could improve AIM’s ratings/rankings next time around; even though the data may not be accurate.

Also, according to Statscan, the number of private dwellings increased from 303 in 2006 to 323 in 2011 (plus 20 or 6.6%) and the number of private dwellings occupied by usual residents increased from 250 to 276 between 2006 and 2011 (plus 26 or 10.4%).

This all adds up to good news for Annapolis Royal!

18th Century Tapestries

Many factors dictated a delayed opening date including delayed access to funds to pay for materials, photos, text panels, etc. We have no control over these and other factors.

That said, the new reception date is Friday, Feb 10th, 7-9 pm for a champagne and chocolate reception and the public exhibit starts next day, Sat. feb. 11th. Haf is working on a sponsor for the reception and this will allow us to include the sponsor on the invitations and other materials. Please note this change on your calendar. Post card invitations will be mailed in a few weeks.

The Four Signers Tapestry which will be displayed at the exhibit was stitched by the citizens of Annapolis Royal and area with an exceptional contribution by Moira MacDonald of Lawrencetown.

Volunteer Week

April 15th to April 21st, 2012
Nomination deadline: February 16, 2012

The Annapolis County Volunteer Awards & Reception is cooperatively coordinated by the Municipality of the County of Annapolis – Annapolis County Recreation Services, the Town of Annapolis Royal, the Town of Bridgetown, and the Town of Middleton – Recreation and Community Services.

Volunteers are an important part of your community. They coach your child’s team and direct community theatre. They respond to fires and look for missing persons. They spearhead community events and development initiatives. Volunteers provide meals to grandparents, serve at church suppers, protect the environment, and serve on boards that
deliver health care services. Volunteers play a critical role in every community across Canada and throughout Nova Scotia. (NS Health Promotion and Protection, 2010) Each year as we celebrate Volunteer Week, our primary purpose is to thank and honour people who donate their time to help others. Each year, we witness Nova Scotia’s passion at work. You are encouraged to nominate a deserving volunteer from your group to receive an award this year; email submissions are strongly encouraged. However, you may submit the nomination via regular mail or fax to:
