The Power of Poetry: A Special Afternoon with Rebecca Thomas

October 14, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Annapolis Region Community Arts Council (ARCAC), in partnership with St. George and St. Andrew United Church, invites you to attend a writing workshop and reading by Mi’kmaw poet and activist Rebecca Thomas. Donations accepted.

Please bring a pad and a writing tool with you.

A brief reception will follow in the church’s fellowship hall.

Rebecca Thomas is a Mi’kmaw poet and activist. Her skills at poetry and persuasion get people to listen to her messages but her ultimate goal is to make Canada a better place for her Indigenous community. Rebecca has captained Halifax Slam Poetry three years in a row, taking the team to the semi-finals in 2016. She has performed with the musical group, A Tribe Called Red, and has spoken and lectured at conferences and coffee houses from coast to coast. With family roots in the Lennox Island First Nation, Rebecca also has written books for children about growing up the child of a residential school survivor. She has written for the CBC and the Washington Post, among others. Rebecca works as the Indigenous Supports Advisor for the Nova Scotia Community College. She is excited about upcoming collaborative programming with the Kitchener/Waterloo Symphony and Symphony Nova Scotia.
