SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Trying to Make Sense by Terry Drahos
DESCRIPTION:Free admission – Light refreshments – Everyone welcome. / Exhibition continues until August 30 in Chapel Gallery\, ARTSPLACE\, 396 St. George St.\, Annapolis Royal www.arcac.ca \nOn the heels of Dada\, Surrealists adopted and adapted collaging and cut-and-paste technique. Much like their “automatic” approach to painting\, these artists relied on the subconscious to produce one-of-a-kind assemblages made of photographs\, illustrations\, coloured paper\, and paint. Working in a similar method\, Drahos started with a series of photographs and thousands of magazine pieces\, loosely combining images in an effort to organize the randomness into some kind of order. The results are a series of collages combining photographs and magazine clipping assembled together to create new meaning. \nOriginally from Chicago\, IL\, Terry Havlis Drahos received her Bachelor of Design from Southern Illinois University and Bachelor of Education at Acadia and NSCAD Universities\, specializing in Art and Technology. \nIncreasingly involved in the Nova Scotia arts community\, Drahos has served on the board of directors for numerous arts organizations. She founded and directed public art and education project Uncommon Common Art (2008-2019). Growing the organization from an ad hoc group of artists to a registered charity recognized in national arts publications. \nHer artwork often examines social identity and perceptions. Drahos has exhibited nationally\, and is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. She is passionate about art education dividing her time between her studio and sharing the love of making with children. \nDrahos’s paintings can be seen at\, Secord Gallery (Halifax\, NS) and Gallery 78 (Fredericton\, NB)

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Sailing through light: The dance of seas and skies by Matt Marquette
DESCRIPTION:Free admission – Light refreshments – Everyone welcome. Exhibition continues until August 30 in Mym Gallery\, ARTSPLACE\, 396 St. George St.\, Annapolis Royal www.arcac.ca \nPainting is how I process the world. As a self-taught artist\, my relationship with oil paint has grown from daily repetition and a deep respect for the act of looking. I work in an impressionistic style\, drawn to fleeting light\, soft edges\, and the quiet moments that often go unnoticed. Whether I’m painting a coastal scene\, an interior\, or an object on a table\, I’m trying to hold on to a feeling—something between memory and presence. \nMy practice is rooted in showing up every day. I paint to better understand color\, atmosphere\, and form—but also to connect. I’ve hosted paint nights to share that process with others\, and I stay engaged with the community through my work at the Halifax Public Library. I believe painting doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. A single brushstroke can carry weight. An ordinary scene can say something honest. Through oil paint\, I try to make space for stillness\, attention\, and beauty in the everyday. \nMatt Marquette (matt.the.painter) is a self-taught oil painter based in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. Originally from Brampton\, Ontario\, he creates impressionistic works that capture quiet\, everyday moments through expressive brushwork\, rich color\, and a strong sense of atmosphere. His subjects range from coastal landscapes and architecture to still life’s and intimate interior scenes. Matt paints daily in his home studio. \nIn addition to his studio practice\, Matt has hosted independent paint nights\, sharing his passion for painting in a welcoming\, hands-on environment. He also works at the Halifax Public Library\, where he remains closely connected to his community and the broader creative scene. His work has been exhibited locally and featured by Visual Arts Nova Scotia\, and he shares his process and finished pieces regularly with a growing audience on Instagram.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: 2025 Members' Exhibition Groove
DESCRIPTION:Free admission – Light refreshments – Everyone welcome. / Exhibition continues until August 30 in Main Gallery\, 396 St. George St.\, Annapolis Royal www.arcac.ca \nARTSPLACE and ARCAC Members invite you to Groove\, an exhibition that explores the rhythms\, textures\, and patterns that shape our experience of art. Whether through tactile surfaces\, layered materials\, subject matter\, sculptural elements\, or sound-based works\, we encourage artists to dive into the physicality of creation. The exhibition will include a guided touch tour designed to broaden access for audiences\, including people who are blind or have low vision\, and those who benefit from tactile engagement. \nArtists were encouraged to interpret Groove in a variety of ways—whether through the physical grooves of carved\, woven\, or layered surfaces; the rhythmic repetition found in patterns\, mark-making\, and natural formations; or the sensory experience of sound waves\, vibrations\, and movement. Whether subtle or bold\, structured or organic\, Groove encourages us to explore the dynamic interplay of touch\, materiality\, rhythm\, and the forces of nature in their work. Consider how the process itself becomes part of the experience—how each decision made in carving\, molding\, or layering influences the final expression\, making the work a tangible\, dynamic force.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Bodies of Water by Coleen Davidson
DESCRIPTION:Free admission – Light refreshments – Everyone welcome. / Exhibition continues until August 30 in Library Gallery\, 396 St. George St.\, Annapolis Royal \nColeen’s collages\, soft sculptures and installations are rooted in the fragile marine environment of rural Nova Scotia\, Canada where she lives. Her practice is informed by formal art training and art history\, but the actual making is intuitive. Colour is important to her as she mixes silk dyes and invent new colour combinations to express the joy she feels in this coastal environment. On volumes of silk and linen fabric\, she paints original designs. Coleen then takes the fabric apart\, collaging the pieces together using thousands of metres of machine embroidery thread and hand stitch. The silk is transformed by an open\, playful and exploratory process. Her installations are focused on the experience of the viewer as she hopes to evoke a memory or feeling of the wind\, water\, lightness\, of a fleeting moment in time. \nColeen’s silk collages bring into view the vulnerability of our marine and coastal environments. She creates immersive installations to share her love of this coastal world. She also makes one-of-a-kind wearable art. It’s in her DNA; her paternal grandmother was a tailor in the Ottawa Valley area of Canada. In all her work we feel her mastery of her materials\, her playful spirit and her commitment to excellence. Coleen teaches silk painting and exhibits in solo\, and group shows. Her work is in private collections in Canada and Internationally.\nwebsite: coleenmdavidson.com\ninstagram: @coleenmdavidson

SUMMARY:Opening: Fishers\, Curtis Botham
DESCRIPTION:Fishers / Curtis Botham\nOpening Reception: Feb 15\, 12-2pm\nEveryone welcome – Light refreshments – Free admission \nExhibition continues February 15 – March 29\, ARTSPLACE Main Gallery \nArtist-in-residence: March 1-29 (supported through The Robert Pope Foundation) \nDescription:\n‘Fishers’ is a project I’ve been working on since 2021. Building off of my prior projects that focused on Nova Scotia’s heavy industries in rural areas (coal\, lumber\, and steel)\, this project examines the most quintessential industry of the province: commercial fishing. \nThis exhibition encompasses all of the large-scale charcoal artworks I’ve made for this project so far. It takes a documentary approach which aims to cut through the sentimental\, picturesque depictions of quaint fishing villages seen in giftshops\, and instead depicts commercial fishing as it really looks\, including the labour and processes involved in taking fish from sea to plate. \nAbout the Artist:\nCurtis Botham graduated from NSCAD University in 2017. He has won numerous grants and awards\, including scholarships from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust\, the Canada Games Young Artist of Excellence Award\, and numerous grants from Arts Nova Scotia and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. His large-scale charcoal drawings have been displayed in galleries around Nova Scotia\, and three of his works have been purchased by the Nova Scotia Art Bank. Since 2017\, he has been interested in exploring the origins\, impacts\, and labour involved in the products that make up our material culture\, and the social and environmental effects that industry and consumerism has on our lives. Since 2021\, this focus on industry and labour has centered around the fishing industry in Nova Scotia. \nSome of Curtis’ artwork can be seen at curtisbotham.weebly.com. He can be contacted at ctbotham@gmail.com.

DESCRIPTION:Alternatives / Karen Phillips-Curran \nResidency: Jan 18 – Feb 16\, ARTSPLACE Studio\nOpen Studio: Drop-in visitors welcome\, by chance during regular gallery hours. \nOpening Reception: Feb 15\, 12-2pm\nExhibition continues Feb 15 – 22\, ARTSPLACE Library Gallery (one week only) \nDescription:\nKaren will make new connections and explore techniques in photography\, particularly focusing on Polaroid emulsion transfers. She will also work on a project involving family photographs\, weaving personal history into her creative process. \n“I’ve been a working artist all my life and I’m in my 70th year now. The twists and turns of this practice are written in the images I’ve created. She sold her watercolours in various venues and galleries around Ontario\, the southern USA and most notably\, in Bermuda. \nKaren has painted English and French theatre sets\, at the National Arts Center in Ottawa.
