Rose Fortune Monument Unveiling and Dedication

July 1, 2017 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 pm

Rose Fortune will be honoured by The Historical Association of Annapolis Royal and the community with a special monument in the Garrison Graveyard on Canada Day. She was an African-Canadian Loyalist who operated a transport business with a wheelbarrow and is recognized as the first policewoman in Canada. One of her descendants, Daurene Lewis, became the first lady of African descent to be elected a mayor in Canada. Bay Ferries’ Fundy Rose from St. John, NB to Digby, NS is named after her, and she is the subject of George Cameron Grant’s award-winning play “Fortune”, inspired by Rose’s story which is related nightly on Alan Melanson’s Candlelight Graveyard Tours. Please join us on the occasion of this very special dedication and monument unveiling. Be a part of history as we celebrate Canada 150 and honour Rose Fortune.
