As the 2030 compliance date for all business to be accessible approaches, these establishments will seek to install accessibility ramps either voluntarily, or as a requirement pursuant to change of use or other factors. For businesses along St. George Street, this will require a degree of encroachment onto the Town’s sidewalk. 

Town Staff have recommended the creation of an Accessibilty Ramp Lease Agreement which will allow the Town to work with businesses to provide accessible entrances, maintain standards, and deal with liability issues. The Streets and Sidewalks By-Law must be updated to incorporate this new agreement.

Additionally, a member of the public submitted suggestions on the Strategic Plan regarding litter in town. Town Staff reviewed the suggestions and incorporated them into Section 13 to provide clarity around the responsibility for addressing litter.

Town Staff recommended updating the Sewer By-law to remove fees related to permits and hook-up to the Town’s sewer system. This is in keeping with the Town’s practice of centralizing the fees for permits in one document and these fees are already outlined in the Town Fines and Fees Policy.

Next Steps…
Council would like to thank all the community members who submitted written feedback and attended the Council Engagement session on October 19th to share their comments and suggestions in person. Council members will be meeting to discuss the input and determine what updates are needed to the Strategic Plan.

Over the coming months, you may notice AIM Network forestry specialists walking through Annapolis Royal’s streets and parks. They’re carrying out a tree inventory as part of the Town’s new Urban Forest Management Plan. This includes recording the species, size, and condition of trees along public streets, in parks, and on other municipal property.

This information will help us understand what’s growing in our community today, and guide decisions about planting, pruning, and protecting trees for decades to come. There’s no need to worry if you see someone inspecting or measuring a tree on your street or near your home – we are just including it in the inventory.
