Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

800 St. George Street is a Picturesque style home located on the upper section of St. George Street, Annapolis Royal, NS. The Municipal Heritage Designation includes the building and the property.

Heritage Value

800 St. George Street is valued for its Picturesque style.

The house was built circa 1878 for Rufus Hardwick, , a prominent lumber mill owner, on land purchased from the estate of the Honourable J.W. Johnston, a prominent lawyer and Member of the Legislative Council and Attorney-General of Nova Scotia. While the house has had additions made to the rear of the building, the original section of the house remains relatively unaltered. The medium gable roof with a west facing dormer and a large, south facing triangular dormer make this house somewhat unique in the town. Located in a residential portion of St. George Street that is predominately comprised of heritage homes, this home is a complimentary addition.
